BIOMECHANICS: THE SAUCONY ENDORPHIN PRO 5
Unlike many carbon-plated super-shoes, recreational runners will find a lot of usable performance in the Endorphin Pro 5. The firm PWRRUN PB foam base offers a high level of compression resistance, meaning it tolerates slow rearfoot landings. Except for the potentially glitchy heel fit, the breathable mesh upper offers secure comfort without narrow tightness.

Mechanics at Work
- Firm Pwrrun PB base → makes heel landings stable
- Softer Pwrrun HG layer → provides underfoot comfort
- Propulsive rocker → makes transitions speed-friendly
- True-to-size upper → offers ventilated and secure fit
Faster speeds are rewarded with energy-conserving transitions and propulsive roll-offs. The firm midsole prevents the foot from sinking into the foam, while the full-length carbon plate smooths transitions. The stiff forefoot and early-stage rocker effect makes toe-offs efficient.

Mechanics at Work
- Firm Pwrrun PB → prevents cushioning sink
- Full-length carbon plate → enables speedy transitions
- Early-stage rocker → helps with quicker toe-offs
True elite-tier shoes like the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 have set fresh benchmarks in this category, so shoes like the Saucony Endorphin Pro 5 now belong to a level below. A level where the relatively accommodating fit lacks aggressive race-day lockdown, the plate isn’t as stiff, and the outsole traction is found wanting at sub-3:00 min/km speeds. The Endorphin Pro 5 isn’t a bad shoe at all for elite and sub-elite athletes, but there are better choices out there.

Mechanics at Work
- Carbon Speedroll plate → conserves energy
- Forefoot rocker → provides propulsion
- Dual-density Pwrrun PB/HG → cushions without bottoming
- Breathable upper → minimizes heat build-up
Not many modern super-shoes support heel landings, but the Endorphin Pro 5 is an exception. The solid under-heel zone and firm PWRRUN PB base make the midsole stable enough for heel landings, while the rest of the parts (like the carbon plate and rocker) work together to offer speed-friendly, race-day performance.

Mechanics at Work
- Filled-up heel core → stabilizes rearfoot landings
- Firm Pwrrun PB base → minimizes compression sink
- Crash pad outsole rubber → adds abrasion-resistant grip
Not only does the Endorphin Pro 5’s design benefit heel strikers, heavy runners and slow speeds, but it also delivers a high level of compression resistance to an overpronated gait. The supportive PWRRUN PB foam (the bottom midsole layer) maintains its structure when loaded. The soft PWRRUN HG makes itself useful by creating a barrier between the arch and the firm midsole edge, minimizing the risk of pressure hot spots.

Mechanics at Work
- Firm Pwrrun PB foam → is compression resistant
- Solid rearfoot core → doesn’t lose structure during overpronation
- Soft Pwrrun HG top layer → prevents pressure hotspot
Runners who weigh over 190 lbs (86 kg) often tend to find carbon-plated racers lacking in support. That’s not the case with the Endorphin Pro 5. The PWRRUN PB foam is made by fusing thousands of foam globules, giving it a denser structure that does a much better job of stabilizing heavy loads than its softer super-foam counterparts. The heel midsole also lacks negative space underneath; this design choice improves the shoe’s load bearing capabilities.

How we scored Saucony Endorphin Pro 5
Select your profile for the score
Our scoring is weighted by intended use and biomechanics. A daily trainer is judged by different standards than a racing shoe. The central Global Score reflects how well this shoe fulfills its intended purpose; if a shoe is weak in foundational areas like stability or traction, our algorithm applies automatic penalty points.
Recreational Score Breakdown
Summary
- Buy If: You want a versatile carbon-plated racer that can go fast on race day, but doesn’t impose a performance penalty on easy runs, heel strikers, heavy runners, and overpronators.
- Avoid If: You run in no-show socks. The synthetic overlay behind the heel collar makes the Achilles lip stiff, which can potentially chafe the skin. Also, the Endorphin Pro does not have the energetic ‘bounce’ of shoes like the adidas Adios Pro 4 or Hoka Rocket X 3, so the supportive ride may not meet your sensory expectations.
🔍 Deep Dive
The Saucony Endorphin Pro 5 is one of the most user-friendly super-shoes on the market. Whether you’re running a sub-3:00 min/km pace or a 5:30 min pace, the firm PWRRUN PB midsole base is cushioned and supportive enough for both scenarios. Unlike many carbon-plated racers that have sacrificed stability for a lighter and bouncier ride, Saucony opts for a safe and conservative design that meets the needs of many. While there’s a new footbed made of the softer PWRRUN HG on top, it’s the firmer base that does most of the heavy lifting. Like the Endorphin Pro 4, the Endorphin Pro 5 sticks with a solid heel core to maintain its stable character.
The new upper is the perfect example of messing with something that wasn’t broken. While most of the breathable upper has an accommodating forefoot and toe box, the heel collar design leaves a lot to be desired. For reasons known only to Saucony, the designers have added a stiff synthetic backing to the Achilles lip and the eyestay. This update introduces the risk of chafing the skin, a problem any racer can do without.
Pros
- High stability for a plated racer
- Doesn’t penalize slow speeds
- Supports heel strikes and overpronation
- Breathable and accommodating fit
- Propulsive rocker
Cons
- Stiff heel collar can chafe skin
