BIOMECHANICS: THE ASICS METASPEED SKY TOKYO

See real-world performance, not simulations. We analyze a library of over 33,000 high-speed photos captured during actual road races to understand how shoes behave outside the lab.
Pace: > 5:30 min/km
Soft and bouncy with a loose fit.

The Sky Tokyo delivers the soft, lightweight, and bouncy super-shoe experience. Overpronators and heavy runners should steer clear.

Recreational: > 5:30 min/km

Mechanics at Work

  • FF Leap/Turbo midsole may cause negative drop.
  • Soft cushioning dilutes the rocker effect.
  • Lack of structural support accentuates over and under-pronation.
  • Loose upper fit lacks a locked-in feel.
Pace: 4:00 - 5:30 min/km
Barring overpronators and heavy runners, mostly trouble-free.

While not as fine-tuned as Sky Paris, the midsole behaves bests under neutral foot-strikes, preferably midfoot/forefoot.

Performance: 4:00 - 5:30 min/km

Mechanics at Work

  • Full-length FF Leap/Turbo foam offers smooth and uniform ride.
  • 40 mm, 35 mm stack makes landings comfortable
  • Carbon plate smooths transition; weak rocker effect.
  • Overly roomy upper fails to securely lock in the foot.
< 4:00 min/km
The Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is an OKAY shoe.

Despite its high-tech foam cushioning, the loose fit and mushy ride makes it less than ideal for high-speed runs.

Elite: < 4:00 min/km

Mechanics at Work

  • Loose upper fi doesn't secure the foot well.
  • Mushy FF Leap midsole results in mild forward shear.
  • Lightweight mesh keeps the foot ventilated.
  • Full-length plate assists loading cycle.
Impact protection
Passable performance, but far from ideal.

The softer-than-before midsole offers low stability and negative drop resistance. Works only for neutral runners with good form.

Heel Striker: Impact Protection

Mechanics at Work

  • Soft midsole foam may produce negative drop.
  • Weak upper structure pulls the upper inwards.
  • Loose upper fit results in foot movement.
  • FF Leap/Turbo midsole is not ideal for overpronators and heavy runners.
Focus: Medial support
Avoid at all costs. Risk of injury.

The ultra-soft midsole will completely collapse under edge overpronation cases. The weak upper fit doesn't help either.

Overpronator: Medial Support

Mechanics at Work

  • Soft midsole, lack of support causes total midsole collapse.
  • Unstructured upper is weak at overpronation management.
  • Loose forefoot fit causes the mesh to gather
Focus: Structure & durability
Only neutral heavy runners need apply.

The FF Leap/Turbo midsole is too soft for heavy runners, but does a half-decent job under a neutral gait.

Heavy Runner: Structure & Durability

Mechanics at Work

  • FF Leap/Turbo stack undergoes deep compression.
  • Soft midsole offers limited support.
  • Loose fit causes forward foot slide.
  • Carbon plate acts more like a transition plate than a rocker.

How we scored the Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

Select your profile for the score

Our scoring is weighted by intended use and biomechanics. A daily trainer is judged by different standards than a racing shoe. The central Global Score reflects how well this shoe fulfills its intended purpose; if a shoe is weak in foundational areas like stability or traction, our algorithm applies automatic penalty points.

Summary

  • Buy If: You prefer a lightweight, cushioned, forefoot-strike-friendly plated racer for a 10K, half, or full-marathon.
  • Avoid If: You're heavy, over-pronate, want a durable everyday trainer, or prefer a secure fit.

🔍 Deep Dive

While lightweight and soft, the Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is a step backwards. Its softer ride and looser fit makes it a less capable tool than the Metaspeed Sky Paris. There are better plated racers out there. The foot moves around inside the loose forefoot and toe-box. The heel lacks the structural support for heel landings and an overpronated gait. In extreme cases, the narrow midsole folds over on the medial side.

Pros

  • Soft, lightweight, and bouncy ride
  • Excellent ventilation
  • Outsole grip

Cons

  • Excessive space negatively affects fit and sizing
  • Highly unstable for heavy runners and overpronators
  • Sloppy heel fit
