Quick Verdict
- Buy If: You're a recreational or mid-pack runner who wants a cushioned everyday trainer with a pronation-resistant midsole. The Kayano 32 is also a capable 10K and marathon shoe for slower than 4:30 min/km (7:00 min/mile) speeds.
- Avoid If: You're looking for a shoe for speedwork (tempo, mile repeats, intervals) or fast races. If that's the case, consider supportive neutral shoes like the Hoka Mach X3 and New Balance SC Trainer V3 that accommodate an overpronated gait.
🔍 Deep Dive
The Kayano 32 delivers what it promises – a balance of comfort and support. Its midsole is designed to resist the inward pressure produced by a collapsing arch. The pronation resistance is achieved through two different means. The first is a wide midsole with a more supportive inner (under arch) side than the outer side. The second feature is the sloped design of the under-heel cavity. The negative space slopes towards the outer midsole, making that side easier to compress than the arch side. The Kayano 32 is the last version to feature this form factor; the Kayano 33 will transition to a brand-new platform.
Barring these two features, the Kayano 32 behaves just like a supportive neutral shoe with generous cushioning comfort. The 40 mm and 30 mm stack heights translate into a 10 mm heel-to-toe offset that doesn’t strain the Achilles. While it serves the needs of heavy runners who need ride comfort and stability, the Kayano 32 isn’t designed to be a speed-focused shoe. Its ideal use cases are everyday training, long runs, and races slower than 4:30 min/km (7:00 min/mile) speeds.
Worth mentioning is that the women’s variant has a 2 mm lower heel offset (8 mm) than the men’s variant (10 mm).

BIOMECHANICS: THE ASICS KAYANO 32
The Kayano 32 goes to work under an overpronated gait. The supportive inner midsole is good at resisting compression, while the sloped under-heel space directs the loading towards the outer side. At the same time, the ride isn't overly prescriptive. All the features work invisibly in the background without making themselves noticed. The highly secure and plush upper is effective at locking the foot onto the midsole.

Mechanics at Work
- Reinforced inner sidewall → resists inward rolling
- Sloped under-heel groove → directs compression to the outer side
- Wide outsole footprint → creates a supportive base
- Compliant FF Blast+ foam → doesn't create a pressure hotspot.
The cushioned FF Blast+ midsole maintains its structural integrity even under hard heel strikes. The articulated crash pad prevents jarring heel strikes, gently guiding the footstrike through the gait cycle. The hard-wearing Asicsgrip rubber protects the midsole from the landing impact. The 40 mm rearfoot stack does a good job of resisting negative drop, reducing the chances of potential Achilles and calf strain.

Mechanics at Work
- Segmented heel crash pad → splays during impact
- Dense FF Blast+ midsole → cushions without collapsing
- Asicsgrip heel outsole → provides durable traction
- Stiff heel counter → keeps the foot locked in
The same feature set that makes the Kayano 32 ideal for overpronators also benefits heavy runners. The resilient FF Blast+ foam midsole and the pronation-resistant sidewalls don't bottom out under heavy loads. However, the rearfoot compression may lower the effective heel drop from the published 10 mm to 4-5 mm.

Mechanics at Work
- FF Blast+ foam → is resistant to bottoming
- Dense foam structure → prevents negative heel offset
- Tall midsole stack → cushions landings
- Wide footprint → supports the body weight
Recreational runners will find supportive comfort in the Kayano 32's Flytefoam Blast+ midsole. The pronation-resistant midsole supports the body weight during impact and transitions. The FF Blast+ midsole offers ride comfort without straying into the 'too mushy' territory. The plush upper feels good on the inside and prevents excessive movement.

- Wide midsole → creates planted landings
- Pronation-resistant midsole → minimizes bias
- Plush upper → offers secure comfort
If you're a neutral or overpronating mid-pack runner, the Kayano 32 delivers a predictable ride that makes it easier to maintain a cadence. There are caveats, of course. For example, the cushioned midsole gets in the way of speeds faster than 4:30 min/km (7:00 min/mile). The layered upper is also not conducive for speed runs because of its average breathability. Other than that, this is a comfortable shoe with functional support.

Mechanics at Work
- Full-length Flytefoam Blast+ → makes transitions smooth
- Snug upper fit → is effective at driving power to the midsole
- Asicsgrip outsole → offers dependable traction during take-offs
- Wide, stable midsole → doesn't interfere with the gait
There's a reason why no elite or sub-elite runner wears the Kayano - it's just too much shoe. Our 'mechanics at work' section explains how different features of the Kayano 32 get in the way of running fast.

Mechanics at Work
- Lack of rocker → weakens propulsion
- 10.6 oz (300 gm) weight → adds bulk if used as a racer
- Absence of plate-like structure → slows transitions
- Thick, plush upper → generates heat at speeds
