Quick Verdict
- Buy If: You want a max-cushioned trainer for everyday and long-distance runs, including marathons, but only for easy-pace use.
- Avoid If: You want a versatile trainer that can go faster than 5:30 min/km, or deliver the snappy feel of supershoes.
🔍 Deep Dive
The Bondi 9 is the most refined version yet, combining its signature plushness with a fine-tuned upper fit. It delivers max-cushioning with a rubbery bounce while offering decent stability with a mild rocker effect. As for the downsides, the thick upper mesh limits ventilation. The EVA midsole stiffens in below-freezing temperatures, and it’s less stable than the Bondi 8.
Pros
- True-to-size. Secure and plush fit, spacious toe-box.
- Reflective accents for low-light visibility.
- Max-cushioned with a smooth ride and rubbery bounce.
- Stable enough for heavy runners and overpronators.
Cons
- The thick mesh upper runs warm in summer.
- 10.5-ounce weight and tall stack decreases versatility.

BIOMECHANICS: THE HOKA BONDI 9
What you see is what you get; deep cushioning with a rubbery bounce. Excellent for easy-speed runs.

Mechanics at Work
- 100% compression-molded EVA midsole → produces smooth transitions.
- 42.5 mm and 35.5 mm stack → offers max-cushioning with rubbery bounce.
- Stiff forefoot and rocker → creates propulsive roll-offs.
- Secure upper fit → prevents slippage and secures the foot.
The tall midsole increases the workload for mid-pack or performance-oriented runners. The transitions feel lazy, and the Bondi 9 is out of its depth at these speeds.

Mechanics at Work
- Ultra-tall midsole → adds comfort but makes transitions sluggish.
- Wide base → offers decent support.
- 10.5-ounce weight profile → is not ideal for 4:00 - 5:30 min/km speeds.
- Secure upper → is efficient at driving power to the midsole.
There's absolutely zero reason to buy the Bondi 9 for < 4:00 min/km runs. The thick midsole will slow you down while increasing the workload for the foot.

Heel strikers will land on the full 42.5 mm stack and wide midsole base. The EVA foam midsole offers satisfactory support and negative-drop resistance.

Mechanics at Work
- 45 mm heel stack → results in deeply-cushioned landings
- Softer than before foam → may briefly compress to a zero-drop state.
- Ultra-wide midsole → keeps the foot supported during the gait cycle.
- Secure and plush upper → locks the foot down over the midsole.
While wide base, high torsional rigidity, and secure upper limits pronation, the softer Bondi 9 is less supportive than the Bondi 8. On the bright side, runners will no longer feel the hard midsole of the Bondi 8 pressing against their arch.

Mechanics at Work
- Wide midsole base → does a decent job of managing mild overpronation.
- Softer midsole → lacks the support for heavy overpronators.
- High torsional rigidity → prevents total midsole collapse.
- Structured and secure upper → provides comfortable lockdown.
The soft midsole behaves as expected, compressing under loading to create zero-drop conditions. The midsole lacks the necessary stability for heavy overpronators.

- Reformulated EVA foam → smoothens ride, offers rubbery bounce.
- Snug and plush upper → excels at locking the foot in.
