Hoka Bondi SR product box.

If you’re reading this article, we assume that you want a black leather upper with the comfort of a running shoe. We say this because actual running in black leather shoes isn’t ideal due to the lack of ventilation, added weight, reduced flexibility, and inability to wick sweat. Leather uppers also require a longer break-in period and usually cost more.

For this guide, we chose models that are heavily inspired by performance running shoes, meaning they deliver equal or similar levels of comfort. The Brooks Max L utilizes the same sole as the performance running version, but features a leather upper with a shorter and narrower fit. The Hoka Bondi SR has a similar feel to the previous generation Bondi 7 and is upgraded with a slip-resistant outsole and easy-to-clean leather upper. The Saucony Guide Metro is based on the same midsole as the Guide 18, delivering identical levels of stability for overpronators. The Hoka Bondi SR and Saucony Metro LE also sell in a ‘wide’ sizing.

Service industry and healthcare professionals will benefit from a slip-resistant outsole on the Hoka Bondi SR. If you spend most of your time outdoors (law enforcement, postal deliveries), then shoes like the Ghost Max L and Saucony Guide Metro L will perform just as well.

Best for slip resistance: Hoka Bondi SR
Hoka Bondi SR product box

Hoka Bondi SR

The Bondi SR’s firm and deep cushioning offers supportive cushioning with a slip-resistant outsole.

Buy from Amazon.com

The Hoka Bondi SR is a multi-role sneaker with a leather upper and roomy fit. The true-to-size forefoot and toe-box fit wider than the standard Bondi, with an optional wide width for even more space. The water-resistant leather repels liquids and protects the foot from bumps and scratches. The forefoot and midfoot use a single panel of leather, making it easy to wipe clean after use. The padded tongue and heel locks the foot in, but the tongue takes a few wears to break in. At first, the stiff eyelet panels (the last two rows) and leather tongue flap create a pressure hot spot on the inside of the foot.

Like any other shoe with a smooth leather upper, the Hoka Bondi SR will run hot in non-climate-controlled environments. That’s not great for summers, but ideal for winters. One last thing about the upper: once it fully breaks in after a few months of wear, the leather upper loses its shape. The performance isn’t affected, but that’s something you should know before you buy the Bondi SR. It’s the combination of the spacious fit and inevitable stretching of the leather that loosens the structure of the toebox.

The firm EVA foam midsole has a drop-in Ortholite footbed. The firm cushioning does a great job at supporting the foot for hours of standing or walking. The midsole doesn’t have the bouncy ride of the newest trainers, but it has lots of cushioning comfort. The removable Ortholite insole creates a comfortable layer of step-in softness, and the upper is spacious enough to accommodate an orthotic.

The Bondi SR is the only shoe in this guide with a non-marking oil and slip-resistant outsole, making it a bona fide work shoe. The 14-ounce (397-gram) weight is the downside of the leather upper and high-density midsole.

Best for soft cushioning
Brooks Ghost Max L product box

Brooks Ghost Max L

The Ghost Max L has the same cushioning as the performance running version, but with a tighter and shorter fit.

Buy from Amazon.com

(Editor’s note: The Ghost Max L fits smaller and tighter due to its all-leather construction. If you wear a size US 10, get the US 10.5 wide in the Ghost Max L.)

The Ghost Max L is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the leather version of the Ghost Max 2 running shoe with the same midsole and outsole. The DNA Loft V3 foam midsole delivers a soft and cushioned ride that’s ideal for walking and standing. The rubber outsole is borrowed from the mesh version, so it’s not slip-resistant or non-marking. On the bright side, the articulated outsole and DNA Loft V3 midsole make the Ghost Max L a lightweight (11.6 oz, 329 grams) leather trainer.

While the durable leather upper is easy to clean, it has a narrower fit than the mesh model. Since the leather upper is retrofitted to an existing running shoe midsole, it does not account for the decrease in space when a thicker upper material is used. The Ghost Max L fits a half-size shorter and narrower than the regular version. We recommend buying the optional ‘wide’ width in a half-size larger for a comfortable fit.

  • Brooks’s marketing pitch: Maximum comfort and cushioning for your feet.
  • Upper: Synthetic suede and mesh; no sleeve.
  • Midsole: Full-length DNA Loft V3 supercritical foam. 6 mm heel drop.
  • Outsole: Soft blown rubber under forefoot, firmer rubber under the heel.
  • Weight: 315 gms/ 11.1 Oz for a half pair of Men’s US 9/UK 8/EUR 42.5/CM 27.
  • Stack heights: 39 mm (heel), 33 mm (forefoot).
  • Available widths: Single -D – regular.
  • Country of origin: Vietnam.
  • Recommended use: Walking, slow runs, standing
  • Footstrike orientation: Heel, midfoot/forefoot (full contact).
  • Recommended temperature range: Warmer than -5° C/23° F.

Pros

  • All-day comfort
  • Durable and easy to clean upper
  • Secure forefoot and roomy toe box
  • Wide midsole/outsole footprint
  • Outsole grip

Cons

  • Lack of optional widths
  • Heavy

Best for overpronators
Saucony Guide Metro LE product box

Saucony Guide Metro LE

Saucony combines the Guide 18 midsole with a leather upper to create a comfortable shoe for overpronators.

Buy from Zappos.com

The Guide Metro LE shares its midsole and outsole with the Guide 18, a running shoe with supportive cushioning for overpronators. The Guide Metro manages overpronation with its wide midsole and raised sidewalls. The high midsole edges cups around the foot for a locked-in feel while the wide base adds stability. The tall stack heights (35 mm and 29 mm) of the EVA foam midsole make walking and standing comfortable, with the removable Pwrrun+ (E-TPU foam) footbed adding extra softness closer to the foot. The outsole is mostly foam, so the quality of grip is decent but not great.

The upper uses soft leather panels for a secure and protective fit that’s true to size. The all-leather upper construction decreases interior space, so get the wide version for a roomier fit.

Best on a budget
Saucony Integrity Metro LE product box

Saucony Integrity Metro LE

This $100 trainer combines the Ride 15 sole with a leather upper.

Buy from Zappos.com

Remember the Saucony Ride 15 from a few years ago? The Integrity Metro LE is based on the same sole design, but in a lower spec material. The midsole is made of injection-molded EVA foam called Versarun. It’s nothing special, but it gets the job done. The tall foam midsole provides durable all-day cushioning, and the firm density makes the shoe stable. The outsole grip is par for a running shoe, but special features like oil and slip resistance are lacking.

This leather trainer is built on the same last as the Ride 15, so it has a snug fit by default. A leather upper only makes the upper narrower. Unless you have narrow feet, consider buying the wide version for a comfortable fit.
